Retrograde is when a planet or body appears to be moving backwards in the sky for a short amount of time.
When you were younger, you probably spent some time in the car on the highway watching the other cars. When the car we are in gains on one ahead of it, we know both are moving forward. But as we pass the car, it appears, briefly, as if it were moving backwards. A similar phenomenon happens with the planets, since they all orbit at different speeds.
Mercury turns retrograde more frequently than any other planet, but the outer planets are in retrograde motion more often than Mercury. Mercury’s short orbit keeps it 28 degrees from the Sun, and when it reaches its edge, it appears to change directions again. Venus and Mars are in retrograde for about 7-10% of the year, and Jupiter and Pluto are in retrograde for large periods of the year.
When we have a Retrograde planet in our Natal Chart (symbolized by an “r”), it implies something missing or lacking in early childhood. Delays are associated with the retrograde planet’s energies.
Mercury in Retrograde
Thinking processes are more acute, and the sense of humor is more recognizably quirky. People with Mercury in Retrograde, take in information in a slightly different manner.
Some people struggle with doubts about their perceptions or ability to learn, which can lead to a lot of thinking, double-checking, and reviewing thoughts and ideas before communicating them.
Roughly 18% of people are born with a Mercury in Retrograde.
Venus in Retrograde
Socializing is taken seriously, though these people can be somewhat shy in youth. There can be a moderate awkwardness felt concerning small talk, and an aversion for superficialities. There is usually more to them than meets the eye, as their love life (and often financial life) is often hidden in some manner.
Love is extremely important to these individuals, but they may struggle to express to others just how deeply they can love. They need to watch for self-sabotage, in romantic relationships. There may be an underlying feeling of being inadequate, unattractive, or unlovable – deep seeded insecurities are often present. As a result, they can attempt to overcompensate through overeating, serial dating, or by swinging to the opposite side of the pendulum by trying to convince themselves that they don’t need love. These people often swing between the poles many times in one life time. Balance is ideal, and self-love may be the cure.
Roughly 8% of people are born with a Venus in Retrograde.
Mars in Retrograde
Standing up for themselves is difficult for these individuals, as asserting themselves is often a challenge. They fear being ineffective, which may lead to roundabout ways of pursuing goals. Their passionate nature is often misunderstood by others. These natives often keep things to themselves and let them build until they explode, or release their desires (or anger) in sporadic bursts.
They may alternate between coming on too strong sometimes, and not enough at other times – these are the type of people heavily prone to thinking of the better thing to do or say much later, when they are no longer under pressure. Competition can be unnerving to them, and prefer to take things at their own pace rather than working by a schedule of others
They often find creative ways of expressing themselves physically as they mature, as well as finding unusual but effective areas in which to channel their energy.
Jupiter in Retrograde
These natives tend to have unusual perspectives, belief systems, or set of morals. They prefer to learn from their own experiences, rather than from the experiences or words from others. They don’t intrinsically have faith in being lucky, so they become planners who worry about their future or consequences of their actions more than others.
They may need to learn that they deserve what others might naturally feel entitled to.
Saturn in Retrograde
There is often more than usual amounts of guilt and self-doubt for these individuals. Fears are often internalized while a brave mask is worn, so others don’t see them as vulnerable. They also have a tendency to fear letting others down, not fulfilling their responsibilities, or not making choices correctly.
Sometimes, their childhood was not very disciplined or orderly, which may lead their Saturn to function much like a strong Uranus, where the native is uncomfortable with an overly orderly or disciplined life. These individuals may feel especially nervous or anxious when they are in situations that require protocol, etiquette, or specific set of standards or rules.
Uranus in Retrograde
This can lead to a fear of change or a mistrust of new technological improvements. These people may keep their eccentricities to themselves. In some ways, a Uranus in Retrograde is similar to having a strong Saturn in the chart. Their energy is often quite pent up, so while the follow rules for some of the time, there are frequent times wherein the burst out in a fit of rebellion, before going back to the more orderly, law-abiding lifestyle.
Neptune in Retrograde
These individuals tend to hide their vulnerabilities, their spiritual side, or their compassion, as they feel somewhat uncomfortable expressing them. Those traits exist and run deeply, but these natives prefer to keep them private. Deep faith is often missing, so they often are quite mistrustful. When there are blanks in their minds, they usually fill them in with the worst case scenarios. There is often a fear of dreaming too big, as they don’t want to be let down.
Pluto in Retrograde
Natives born with Pluto in Retrograde often fear being controlled, manipulated, or betrayed. They keep most of their fears to themselves, as exposing them makes them feel vulnerable. They don’t as readily let others know their desire for power or control, and might suppress that desire most of the time.
