This question has been floating around my mind for a while and I was curious, who here is an Empath?

An Empath, strictly speaking, is a person with the paranormal ability to apprehend the mental or emotional state of another individual. I think the key word there is "paranormal" (denoting events or phenomena such as telekinesis or clairvoyance that are beyond the scope of normal scientific understanding) and that it's something too often thrown around, much like a lot of other things. My personal bias aside, I do feel that I am very empathetic. I can not read minds or anything of the sort, but I'm quite skilled at intuiting general emotions of a person, and at reading body language. What about yourself?

I am an empath, as I have stated before. I can easily tell the emotions of those around me and have the bad habit of taking those emotions on as my own.

Well I am a very very empathic person but I guess I am certanly not a supernatural Empath. I just know that I am a person who is acting after it's heart (so his emotions) rather than my mind. But my empathic level is pretty high though.
Acutally is it bad to say that I wish I would be an "paranormal empath"? I mean people with this ability have to cope with a lot of emotions, it's hard and sometimes painfull for sure =/

I think I would also want it... As I said, and you did as well, I'm very empathetic, though not quite a "paranormal empath." If I were, I think it'd take a lot of work to control and segregate our own emotions from those of others, but it could be useful in a counseling profession!

Well with empathic powers you could easily do a lot of positive work...well depends on the individual but yes It could be pretty stiring

i think everyone is capable of being an empath, because we are capable of empathy. it's easier for some people though. i also think that if you try to practice empathy a lot and stay with your intuition you could became a 'paranormal' empath. are there any experiences you guys have had using your empathy that you want to share? i assume i'm an empath because like Cro, i often seem to take on the emotions of those around me. sometimes i can't handle crowded places because there's too many energies flying around and it's really overwhelming. i'm always interested in others experiences to compare and contrast!

I recognize a lot of descriptions about empaths, but I haven't read up on it enough to know if I qualify as one.
I am definitely not a paranormal empath. But I tend to mirror other's people's feelings and feel them as if they are my own. Reading or hearing about news stories which involve some kind of loss, violence or abuse affect me really deeply.
I have cried at a funeral of a person who I did not know personally. And even the pain of fictional characters gets to me. Events with a lot of people drain me physically, especially if there is a lot of rubbing shoulders and squeezing past one another.
My boyfriend told me it would be better for me not to get to involved in things that are not my business, but I don't know, do you see empathy as a weakness, strength, or something totally differently?
And is there any way protect yourself from it?

Franka, by keeping yourself open to others energy you can let that energy then attach itself onto you so i think you definitely have to be careful. you can totally choose to close yourself off. i think the act of grounding yourself is supposed to help. there are crystals for grounding and protection as well.
