The Houses represent different spheres of our lives – different themes in the world. The First house is the house of self-identity, tenth house is career, 4th house is our home life, etc. They’re the “where” of the natal chart.
The Signs, as we discussed in video 101, are based on twelve 30 degree divisions of the sky. The Houses depend on your location, and how those divisions are spread out across the sky at the time of your birth. The Sign coming up over the horizon at the time of your birth is called the “Rising Sign” or “Ascendant Sign.” This is the starting point, and the divisions work eastwards (or down) from there.
The Houses have an approximate 24 hour rotation period, each sign is in each house for about 2 hours out of the day. This means they move about 4 degrees every minute.
Due to the inclination of the polar axis in its relationship to the Sun, the number of degrees which pass over the horizon in 2 hours varies with the time of year and the latitude of the place where the birth occurs. While the Midheaven-point moves reasonably steady from day to day throughout the year, the rising and setting-points vary, lengthening into the "long winter evenings" and shortening into the so-called "Daylight Saving" period of long days and short summer nights.
The Ascendant/Descendant Axis divides the Natal Chart into two halves - the visible half and invisible half. The Houses below the Ascendant/Descendant Axis (1st and 2nd quadrants) weren’t visible at the time of birth, whereas the the Houses above the Axis (3rd and 4th Quadrant) were visible at the time of birth.
The Imum Coeli/Medium Coeli (Midheaven) Axis divides the Natal Chart into the Eastern hemisphere (1st and 4th quadrant) and Western hemisphere (2nd and 3rd quadrant). All the celestial bodies in the Eastern hemisphere are Ascending, and the celestial bodies in the Western hemisphere are descending.
The Houses are divided into three categories: Angular (Action), Succedent (security) and Cadent (learning). This correlates with Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable Signs.
The Houses are also associated with Elements: Fire (identity), Earth (material), Air (Social & intellectual), and Water (Soul & Emotional)
