In Astrology, the planets’ positions among the constellations, and the angles between each other, can be used to predict the personality traits, qualities, inner and outer natures, and expression an individual is likely to develop. Each of the 9 Planets is named after an ancient Roman God (with the exception of the Earth), and carry the traits of each. Mercury is the Messenger, Venus is the Lover, Mars is the Warrior, etc.
In Natal Chart Interpretations each Planet represents a different sphere of your personality. The Planets are the functions within our personality. They’re the “what” of the natal chart. They describe how you function, how you feel, what you want, and how you behave. The Sun and Moon, while not technically “planets” are considered in this grouping of the Natal Chart aspects, as they, too, depict sections of an individual’s personality. They are also called the “Luminaries.”
Just like the different Classifications of the Zodiac Signs, there are a few different classifications of the Planets.
The first of which is the classification of Luminary, Personal, Social, and Generational Planets.
The Luminaries are the Sun and the Moon. These “planets” are most visible in the world around us, and shed the most light on our character. These are who we are at our cores.
The Personal Planets are the planets that are closer to Earth, dense, and have (relatively) small orbits. These affect how we treat ourselves, what we want for ourselves, and how we react to external stimuli.
The Social Planets include the jovial planets. These are the planets that are far from Earth, low in density, and have (relatively) large orbits. These affect how we treat others, how we view society, and how we want to interact with the world at large.
The Generational Planets are those furthest from Earth, with extremely long orbits in relation to Earth’s. They can spend up to a generation in each Sign, and effect mass amounts of people in this way.
Luminaries:
Sun, Moon.
Personal Planets:
Mercury, Venus, Mars.
Social Planets:
Jupiter, Saturn.
Generational Planets:
Uranus, Neptune, Pluto.
Next, there is a division between the “Masculine” and the “Feminine” Planets. Masculine Planets are active, and Feminine planets are passive, receptive, and reactive.
The Masculine Planets imply how we outwardly act. The manifestation of these planet’s traits in a Native can be observed.
The Feminine Planets describe how we react, or feel, due to external (or internal) events. The manifestation of these planets cause the Masculine planets to take action. Therefore these planet’s traits in a Native are harder to observe.
Masculine and Feminine
Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus are considered to be Masculine.
The Moon, Venus, and Neptune are considered to be Feminine.
Mercury is considered to be Androgynous, as it has both Masculine and Feminine traits.
Lastly, there is a classification of planets as Malefic and Beneficial. This is not an inclusive classification system, as each only traditionally only contains two planets.
The Malefic Planets are those that naturally symbolize damage and loss. The Benefic Planets are those that assist in a positive outcome.
Malefic:
Mars, Saturn.
Beneficial:
Venus, Jupiter.
Additionally, the South Node is considered to be Malefic, and the North Node is considered to be Benefic.
